The Washington Crossing Chapter Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) and Margaret Gale Thornton Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) held their annual Flag Day Picnic at the Moland House in Hartsville on Sunday June 8. Forty-seven members and guests attended. SAR Chapter Secretary Michael Borish gave the opening remarks. DAR members, Rose Jones and Beverly Schaefer, presented the program titled "History of the U.S. Flag and the Pledge of Allegiance" .
Moland House served as George Washington’s headquarters for 13 days in August 1777 prior to the battle of Brandywine in September 1777. The Betsy Ross Flag is said to have been presented for the first time at Moland House. It is also the location where both the Marquis de Lafayette and Casimir Pulaski (father of the American Calvary) pledged themselves to the cause of the American Revolution.
The DAR and SAR thank the Warwick Township Historical Society for use of their picnic area, and for supplying the chairs, and sound system used for the flag ceremony on the grounds behind the house.
