As the 250th birthday of our nation approaches, historic figures like Ben Franklin, George Washington, and Betsy Ross will come back to life through a partnership between the Doylestown Historical Society (DHS) and the Friends of the Doylestown Library (FODL).
The USA 250 Lecture Series kicked off on October 18, at the DHS Gallery with a visit and lecture from Ben Franklin along with performances by the Cross Keys Connection barbershop quartet, interactive exhibits presented by the Lenni Lenape Tribe, refreshments, and other activities throughout the afternoon.
The lecture series will continue throughout the coming year, with presentations, in character, by George Washington, Betsy Ross, and other historic figures. Additional lecture topics will include: The Revolutionary War in Bucks and Montgomery Counties; Colonial Garments; Doreen Stratton – A Witness to Juneteenth; and Colonial Beer Brewing.
“We are fortunate to enjoy such rich history in the Doylestown area, and there’s no better time to share that history than our nation’s 250th birthday,” said Ron Strouse, president of the DHS Board.
“This partnership with DHS is a way to expand our programs at the library and bring local history to our community,” added FODL President Steve Schreiner.
A complete schedule of the USA 250 Lecture Series is available on both organizations’ web sites: DoylestownHistorical.org and FriendsofDtownLibrary.org.
Programs hosted by the DHS will be in their gallery located at 56 South Main St. in Doylestown. Programs hosted by the Doylestown Library will be in the Pearl Buck Room, located at 150 S. Pine St. in Doylestown.
As a fundraiser, the DHS will also sell a commemorative ornament of the USA 250 logo at the kickoff and other events throughout the year.
