The importance of Mohs surgery in skin cancer treatment

Posted

As summer begins and we spend more time outdoors, it's essential to stay mindful of the health of our skin. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, with more than 5 million cases diagnosed each year. Fortunately, advances in dermatologic surgery—particularly Mohs micrographic surgery—have transformed the way we treat the most common types of skin cancer, including basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.

Mohs surgery is a precise, tissue-sparing technique that offers the highest cure rate—up to 99% for certain skin cancers—while preserving as much healthy skin as possible. This is especially important for cancers located in cosmetically sensitive or functionally critical areas such as the face, ears, and hands. During Mohs surgery, we excise the skin cancer and a thin margin of normal skin. We examine the tissue under a microscope in our on-site lab while you wait comfortably in the exam room. If there is any cancer left over, we remove another thin layer only from that section. This allows us to remove the entire skin cancer, conserve as much normal tissue as possible and minimize the size of the wound.By analyzing the margins in real time, we can ensure the highest level of accuracy while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible.

At our Yardley office, we’re proud to offer this gold-standard treatment to our community. Mohs surgery is not only effective but also efficient, typically completed in a single visit with local anesthesia. This allows patients to return to their normal activities quickly with minimal downtime.

As we head into the sunnier months, I encourage everyone to wear sunscreen, avoid peak sun hours, and schedule regular skin checks. Early detection is key, and Mohs surgery provides a highly successful treatment option when skin cancer is found.

Your skin is your body’s largest organ—protect it. And if you ever have concerns, we’re here to help with immediate appointments available at two convenient Yardley locations.  Give us a call today at 888-818-3376 or book online at www.dermpartners.com.
