For 35 years, John C. Kernan has served as the Chief Fire Marshal of Upper Makefield Township, bringing an unparalleled level of expertise, dedication, and leadership to our community. His career spans decades of fire investigation, emergency response, and public safety, making him an invaluable asset to the township and beyond.
John’s experience goes far beyond the borders of Upper Makefield. As an internationally certified fire and explosion investigator, he has investigated over 1,000 fires, including multi-million-dollar losses, fire fatalities, and post-blast explosions. His work has taken him across the United States and internationally to Canada, Great Britain, Bahrain, and Kuwait. Yet, despite his global experience, he has remained committed to protecting his neighbors of Upper Makefield.
Beyond his fire marshal duties, John has played a critical role in fire safety education, emergency management, and forensic investigations. He has trained professionals worldwide, advised on fire code regulations, and contributed to fire science programs in the US and abroad. His expertise has been recognized at the highest levels, including a special commendation from the Fire Department of New York for his volunteer efforts at Ground Zero on September 11, 2001.
