Very early in my career as a dentist, I came across this saying: “Beware of bargains in parachutes, brain surgery and dentistry”. While I agree that a bargain in dental work is less likely to lead to catastrophic results than a parachute or brain surgery, there is definitely truth to the sentiment.
Sometimes a bargain isn’t really a bargain. Sometimes the value isn’t apparent until you view it in the rearview mirror. Is a bargain crown that lasts three years better than a more expensive crown that lasts twenty? Many factors play into your decision about spending discretionary dollars for dental health.
Some factors to consider are the experience of the dental team, the cleanliness and appearance of the office, the responsiveness and communication skill of the team, the number of years that the dentist will “warranty” or stand behind his work, and, finally, the cost.
Making dentistry affordable has always been a challenge, even more so for senior citizens. They retire, lose their work dental insurance benefit, move to a fixed income, and live longer! But affordable and achievable dental work is usually an option.
Some dental offices will work with the patient to set up a payment plan. Many offer outside financing that will allow interest free payments for a specific period of time (usually 12-18 months). The interest is paid by the dentist. Credit cards can work well if the patient is anticipating future income (RMD’s from pension plans, for instance).
Another option is increasingly more prevalent throughout the dental industry. In-house savings plans offer the patient an option to prepay (at a discount, usually for a year) for his routine care and emergency appointments, while providing a discount for restorative and other dental work.
If you trust your dentist and feel comfortable with his office and team, don’t rush out to look for bargains. Ask them how they can help to make your dental work affordable. You may find that your best dental bargain is right in front of you!
